Hurricane Harvey Relief_HSAs our Early Response Team, led by Rev. Chuck Graff and Rev. Phyllis Barren prepare to head toward the Texas Coast to serve Thursday – Sunday, September 7 – 10, we want to gather our First Church community behind them in thought and prayer.

The team will be carrying the 150 flood buckets assembled and donated by our church with them to South Texas for immediate use.

As a quick update on other Hurricane Harvey relief work being done by our church, Linda Murphy, Director of the First Street Methodist Mission reports that with the tremendous response from our congregation to their request for volunteers to help assemble “Harvey Bags” this past week, we have plenty of Harvey bags now ready to go! “Thank you so much to all who responded!” she adds. “Over the next few weeks as we assess further needs, we’ll be setting up a dedicated “Harvey Bag Assembly Day” to replenish our supply as needed.” Sign up to receive updates on volunteer opportunities.

And finally, a big Thank You to First Church donors who have contributed a whopping $52,249.77 in donations toward Hurricane Harvey Relief. However, with damage estimates now topping $40 billion and climbing, donations are still the best way to help those affected. While not everyone can volunteer or travel to be part of the massive relief efforts going on across the Texas Coast, by using any of our easy ways to give, you can be part of our churchwide response to those affected by this devastating storm.

If you have not yet donated to our dedicated FUMCFW Hurricane Relief Fund, please know that needs are still escalating and every donation helps.

  • Give online using the Quick Give button and selecting “Hurricane Relief” from the drop-down menu
  • Make your check payable to FUMCFW, with “Hurricane Relief” in your memo line, and bring it to the church and/or drop it in the offering plate on Sunday.
  • Text 817-241-2327 and enter the dollar amount and Hurricane Relief in the message bar. You must have a ShelbyGive account set up with the church in order to Text to Give.
  • If you haven’t already, now is a great time to download the Shelby NEXT Giving App to enable giving right from your smart phone.

Please remember that giving directly to our church helps support the various ways we are responding, and then we will donate any additional funds to UMCOR. It is important to note that unlike other worthy relief organizations that have to use part of the donations they receive for administrative expenses, 100% of UMCOR funds go directly to those in need.
