“Journey of Dementia: Stages and Gems”
Led by Linda Abel, RN
Bring your lunch at 11:30 am — or dinner at 5:30 pm — and we’ll watch together this informative and entertaining DVD featuring international dementia care pioneer Teepa Snow. This session will help us to understand more about the journey of dementia for those who have it and those who love them. It is a way to begin equipping ourselves to provide support for those in our faith community facing the Journey of Dementia. It will help us focus on what people have left rather than what they have lost. An optional discussion led by FUMCFW Alzheimer’s and Dementia Support coordinator Linda Abel will follow each presentation for those who can and would like to stay for an additional hour.
Linda Abel, who will lead this program and discussion, says that she is delighted and excited to have recently found a new calling in the area of dementia care. “Having been praying for months about where I needed to serve at First Church, I walked past the library display window one Sunday morning and saw materials from Teepa Snow. I had recently been using her materials in the classes I teach for assisted living managers and nurses so I was intrigued to see her DVDs in the church library. Upon inquiring, I learned of the bequest from the Ostby family and the plans for a dementia support ministry. I was certain this was God’s answer to my prayers.” Having completed her certification requirements for becoming a Positive Approach to Care (PAC) Coach, Linda will lead each session and work with the FUMCFW Library to provide an ongoing and growing resource for vital information in this exciting new area of FUMCFW ministry.
As we welcome Linda to this pivotal role in our faith community we encourage everyone to come and experience the uplifting magic of Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care™ in “Journey of Dementia: Stages and Gems,” which is part of our two-year monthly series on dementia and Alzheimer’s support which will culminate in a live presentation by internationally renowned dementia care expert and pioneer Teepa Snow in September 2018. This series is open to our church family, friends, guests, local caregivers and families and anyone interested in this vital information. As FUMCFW takes this bold step toward becoming a model for how faith communities can learn more, do more, and care more, we invite each and every one of you to become part of this exciting movement to help change the culture of dementia care and support in our community and in our world.
