Dr. Lamar E. Smith answered the call to the ministry for these reasons: “My love of people, my love for the Methodist Church, and my respect for my parents, for whom the ministry and church were vitally important. I appreciate the opportunities to serve people on some of the most important days of their lives.”
Lamar has a passion for travel, visiting Israel seven times, and 29 other countries. He also enjoys reading and golf. One of his favorite quotes is by Mark Twain, “The two most important days in your life are the day you are born, and the day you find out why.”
Born in Jasper, Texas, Lamar grew up in Mineola, graduating from high school there and continuing to Texas Wesleyan University and Perkins School of Theology at SMU. He was the sixth of eight children and loved being part of a large family. He has three children: Dell Smith Wood, L. Edward Smith II and E. Hudgens Smith.
